Terrarium FAQs

How do the plants in a terrarium get water?

Terrariums create a mini self-sustaining ecosystem. Water from the soil and plants evaporates, condenses on the glass, and drips back down, mimicking the natural water cycle. It keeps the environment moist and helps your plants thrive without intervention.

How do the plants in a terrarium breathe?

Plants have tiny little pores on their leaves that let them “breathe.” During the day, they soak up sunlight and turn it into energy, releasing fresh oxygen into the jar. At night, when it’s dark, they use some of that oxygen to keep themselves going—just like we do when we sleep!

Do I need to fertilise my terrarium?

Nope! Fertiliser can actually encourage too much growth, which isn't ideal in a closed container. Your plants are happiest staying small and low maintenance.

Should I ever water my terrarium?

If you notice the soil looks completely dry or there’s no condensation on the glass, it might be time for a light watering. Use a spray bottle and go easy because it’s easier to fix an underwatered terrarium than an overwatered one.

How do I know if I’ve overwatered my terrarium?

Signs of overwatering include soggy soil, constant heavy condensation, mould, or mushy plants. If that happens, remove the lid, let it air out, and avoid watering until it’s completely dried out again.

How much light does my terrarium need?

Bright, indirect light is best. Keep it near a window, but out of direct sun because too much can cause overheating and scorch the plants. Avoid dark corners, as the plants still need light to stay healthy.

Should I rotate my terrarium for even light?

Yes! Rotating your terrarium every week or so helps all sides of the plants grow evenly and keeps them from leaning too much in one direction.

Do I need to trim the plants in my terrarium?

Yes, a little tidy-up now and then helps keep things balanced. If a plant is growing too tall or crowding the space, feel free to trim it back with clean scissors.

What should I do if there’s too much condensation in my terrarium?

Too much fog on the glass? Just take the lid off slightly, resting it on the neck of the jar. Place the lid back on after a couple of hours.

Can I add new plants or decorations to my terrarium myself?

Definitely! You can carefully add or swap plants and decorations as you like. Just make sure anything new is clean and suitable for humid environments.

How long will my terrarium last?

With proper care, your terrarium can thrive for years or even decades. Keep an eye on moisture and light levels, and you’ll be enjoying your terrarium for a long time.
